What is the DEA?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Drug Enforcement Administration<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the United States Department of Justice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsible for the Controlled Substances Act<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those authorized to possess controlled substances must be registered by the DEA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each location that manufacturers, distributes or dispenses controlled substances must have its own DEA registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pharmacists usually do not need to register as an individual with the DEA if they are working in a registered location.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All locations that manufacturer, distribute or dispense controlled substances must register with the DEA with the exception of:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
  1. Warehouses used for storage of controlled substance by registrants<\/li>
  2. A prescriber\u2019s office where controlled substances are prescribed \u2013 not administered or dispensed.<\/li>
  3. Freight delivery companies<\/li>
  4. A location where sales of controlled substances are made, solicited or supervised, but the location does not actually keep controlled substances on site<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    DEA registrations are valid for 36 months.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Renewal forms are sent to the registrant 60 days before the current registration expires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Registrant must contact the DEA in writing if they do not receive their renewal forms within 45 days before the current registration expires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The DEA may deny or revoke a registration if:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    1. Information on the application is untrue<\/li>
    2. Applicant has been convicted of a drug-related felony<\/li>
    3. Registration would be inconsistent with the public interest<\/li>
    4. State license has been suspended, revoked or denied<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      May also revoke license if applicant is excluded from Medicare or state health program participation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Federal law does NOT require the applicant for DEA registration to be a pharmacist. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Hospital registrations are treated as an \u201cinstitutional practitioner\u201d and DEA registration is issued to the entire hospital.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Power of Attorney<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      An applicant may authorize another individual or individuals to sign official forms by filing with the Registration Unit of the DEA, a Power of Attorney for each authorized individual. It remains valid until revoked with a Notice of Revocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
